Mirror Of Yew

Four possible relations with Nature. First the Deuteronomy version, asserting man's domination, second, the notion of stewardship, enlightened self interest, preserving for future generations. Farmers and small landowners do a lot but not enough to prevent loss of forest in UK, still less worldwide.

Thirdly to let Nature be a mirror to us, past a commercial view, a balance of our survival needs and hers, to view the trees as living beings not simply a crop. To balance our population with resources, not to eat up the whole store cupboard and pretend plantations are a replacement. Rhubarb trees marching over every hill simply mirror the poverty of our exploitative attitude.

At least some forest should be left as it is, to live and die and never be cut. More should be planted for its own sake, (as for example Trees for Life is doing in Glen Affric).
